On December 20, 2024, the public is warmly invited to the Nieuwe Badkapel, where the choir and orchestra of the Haags Barokgezelschap, along with soloists under the direction of conductor Gilles Michels, will perform a concert full of variety.

First on the program is the unknown Magnificat “Meine Seel erhebt den Herren” by Thomas Selle. In this hymn of praise, instrumental sections, choir verses, and soloist duets or quartets follow each other in a playful manner.

Next is part 5 “Ehre sei dir, Gott, gesungen” from the Christmas Oratorio BWV 248-5 by Johann Sebastian Bach. Also in Bach’s time this six-part Christmas Oratorio was not performed in one evening. This year, the HBG chose part 5.

Finally, the Kyrie and Gloria from the Mass in B minor BWV 232 - Bach’s most sublime work for choir and orchestra - will form the colorful prelude to Christmas.

In the words of Gilles Michels: “The Mass in B minor is the Mount Everest of classical music. A great musical wonder, of unparalleled beauty, complex but directly touching the heart. It plays on all emotions from great sadness and contemplation to ecstatic joy and zest for life. For performers and listeners, it is a confrontation with an awe-inspiring masterpiece.
